What Are Plant Points – And Why Do We Count Them?
At Field Doctor, we believe that eating lots of different plant foods each week is a positive thing you can do for your gut health and overall wellbeing. That’s why we track something called plant points in every meal we make.
What are plant points?
Plant points are a simple way to measure how many different plant-based foods you eat. Each plant offers different nutrients that can benefit your health and gut microbiome. So the more variety, the better.
How do we calculate plant points?
We look at every plant-based ingredient in a meal and assign:
1 full plant point for each distinct, whole plant-based ingredient (like vegetables, grains and pulses).
0.25 plant points for smaller or fractionalised plant ingredients (like spices, herbs, oils and plant milks).
Not all ingredients count — we only include those that contribute to plant diversity.
So how many should I aim for?
Preliminary research suggests that eating 30 or more different plant-based foods each week may contribute to a healthy gut microbiome. Eating a big variety of plants also means you're more likely to get all the vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay healthy.
Our meals help you achieve this variety easily — many of them pack 10 or more plant points into a single dish.
